An interactive device was developed for the Traces of Disaster section of Heureka’s Facing Disaster exhibition. It allows visitors to experience the role of randomness as part of an immersive exhibit. The device punches a hole in a cardboard disc at a random point within a specified radius of its center. The goal was to create a safe, reliable solution for exhibition use that could withstand continuous operation.
Safety and Reliability
A key challenge was developing a mechanism that would produce a random yet controlled result with each use. The hole had to be punched at a different point on the disc each time while remaining precisely within a specified radius of the center.
At the same time, the device had to withstand continuous use in a busy exhibition environment by visitors of all ages. This placed particular demands on safety, operational reliability, and low maintenance requirements.
Additionally, the system had to feed the cardboard disc reliably, manage the waste generated during punching, and return the disc to the user. The mechanism had to operate smoothly even in the event of an error, without risk of damage.
Exhibition-Ready Devices
The project began with concept development and technical ideation, during which different approaches to implementing the punching mechanism were explored. Particular attention was paid to producing the required force and ensuring that the punching operation could be repeated safely and reliably under different conditions.
During development, the mechanisms for feeding and returning the cardboard disc were designed. The resulting solution was a sheet-metal feed tray that guides the disc to the punching mechanism in a controlled manner and ensures reliable operation under varying conditions.
The punching mechanism was developed iteratively by testing different solutions and materials. The design accounted for potential feed errors and the handling of more rigid materials without damaging the device or disrupting its operation.
During the project, the device components were manufactured and finalized, and three functional devices were assembled for exhibition use. The overall system was optimized to be durable, easily maintainable, and a reliable part of the exhibition.
