Bringing an IoT Device into Production with Industrial-Grade 3D Printing

Xedi Oy’s eFeeler is an intelligent control solution that enables electricity consumption monitoring and optimization based on spot electricity pricing. The device is integrated into the property’s electrical system and controlled via a mobile application that helps users schedule appliance usage during the most cost-effective periods. The objective was to rapidly develop a user-friendly and cost-effective solution for the fast-changing energy market and bring it to market quickly.

The Challenge

A key challenge was the exceptionally tight schedule. Volatile electricity prices created an urgent need to bring the solution to market quickly, limiting the use of traditional manufacturing methods and requiring rapid decisions on design and production.

At the same time, the product had to be technically sound, easy to install, and intuitive to use. The project started with predefined electronics, around which a functional and manufacturable product had to be developed. The solution also needed to support small-batch production and agile further development without significant investment.

Rapid Transition from Design to Production

The project was carried out as a focused, fast-paced development effort covering product design, structural design, and productization around the existing electronics. The design accounted for ease of installation, usability, and manufacturability across different use scenarios.

Industrial-grade 3D printing was selected as the manufacturing technology, enabling a rapid transition from design to production without tooling costs. This provided freedom in design solutions and enabled iterative development throughout the product lifecycle.

We worked closely with the manufacturing partner to optimize material selection and manufacturing solutions. The solution accounted for both mechanical durability and production scalability. The product was taken from concept to finished form on an exceptionally fast schedule.

Flexible Production and Agile Changes

LINK was responsible for product design, mechanical engineering, and productization on a turnkey basis. The work combined industrial design, structural engineering, and manufacturing technology selection. LINK served as the central coordinator between different stakeholders and ensured that design and manufacturing supported each other throughout the project.

In addition, we were responsible for the overall feasibility, product finalization, and ensuring that the solution met both technical and commercial objectives.

The result was a functional and cost-effective control solution brought to market quickly, addressing a timely need in electricity consumption optimization.

The 3D printing-based manufacturing solution enables flexible production and agile changes throughout the product lifecycle. It supports rapid product development and provides the ability to respond to market changes without major investment.

The overall solution combines usability, manufacturability, and rapid market entry into one functional product.
