{"id":15744,"date":"2026-09-10T12:27:04","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T09:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/linkdesign.fi\/nature-phenomenon-of-the-month-the-product-developers-summer-migration\/"},"modified":"2026-09-10T12:28:54","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T09:28:54","slug":"nature-phenomenon-of-the-month-the-product-developers-summer-migration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/linkdesign.fi\/en\/nature-phenomenon-of-the-month-the-product-developers-summer-migration\/","title":{"rendered":"Nature Phenomenon of the Month: The Product Developer&#8217;s Summer Migration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In late June, one of the most fascinating phenomena of Northern nature can be observed in the Finnish working environment: the annual summer migration of product development professionals.<\/h4>\n\n<div style=\"height:26px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Subtle changes are observed at first<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An attentive observer notices the first signs well in advance.<br\/>Engineers, designers, and other experts who have thrived at their workstations throughout the long winter begin to behave restlessly. Mysterious entries such as &#8220;holiday,&#8221; &#8220;Midsummer,&#8221; and &#8220;away&#8221; appear in calendars. Ritualistic conversations about weather forecasts take place over coffee mugs. One individual mentions a cottage in their stories. Another, a boat. A third declares the ambitious goal of doing absolutely nothing.     <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Then comes the departure<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a sure sign that the migration is beginning. In the final days, the activity of individuals intensifies. Unfinished tasks are closed, files are saved with exceptional intensity, and out-of-office replies appear in email systems like flocks of migratory birds in the spring sky.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then the departure happens. With one precisely timed movement, the expert detaches from the office environment and moves to their summer habitat. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Typical sighting locations<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typical sighting locations include piers, archipelagos, terraces, forest paths, hammocks, and places where mobile network coverage is just barely insufficient for Teams meetings.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Field studies show that an individual recovers most effectively in an environment where the number of meeting invites approaches zero and the most demanding decision of the day involves whether to heat the sauna before or after swimming.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Behavior during the transition phase<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the first days of holiday, remnants of behavior adapted to the work environment can still be observed. For example, an individual may check their email instinctively. However, the phenomenon is usually short-lived and does not require outside intervention. After a few days, attention naturally shifts to more essential matters, such as lighting the grill, the water temperature, or how many mosquito bites everyone has on their calves.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interestingly enough, creativity also seems to behave differently during the summer. While new ideas are coaxed out at the office through workshops, sketches, and prototypes, in a summer environment, they appear entirely on their own. At the end of a pier. In a boat. On a forest path. On the sauna benches. Or in the middle of the night, just when the individual has finally managed to forget the very existence of their work project.      <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The &#8220;Quick Little Job&#8221; phase<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the early holiday symptoms have subsided, something particularly interesting happens. The individual begins to view their immediate surroundings from the perspective of development opportunities. The pier seems to need a small improvement. The terrace could be a bit larger. It would be good to build a shelf in the shed. A new solution is needed for the summer kitchen. At this stage, the individual utters, almost without exception, the sentence:      <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;This is just a quick little job.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers consider this vocalization a significant behavioral signal. It is often followed by a construction or design project lasting several days, whose original purpose changes an average of three times during implementation and whose final scope exceeds the original estimate many times over. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers have still not been fully able to explain the phenomenon. According to current understanding, a Finnish product developer does not stop problem-solving during their holiday at all.
